Public Lands Need our Help
National Public Lands Day is Saturday, September 25

Most of us use trails in the High Country, and some of us have even vowed to volunteer a day of work to give something back to this cherished resource. National Public Lands Day makes it easy to pitch in. In its 17th year as a coast-to-coast one-day event, NPLD brings more than 100,000 Americans together to collect trash, pull weeds, plant trees, construct trails and build bridges over wetlands.

Grand County hosts one of the largest and longest-running NPLD events in the country (16 years)! Volunteers will have different projects to choose from all during peak foliage. There are projects geared to enthusiasts of mountain biking, motorized vehicles, fishing, hiking and boating, and many different jobs available to accommodate kids and less fit individuals.

On top of enjoying eye-popping scenery during the height of aspen foliage, volunteers are taken care of with a complimentary breakfast, lunch and dinner provided with help from local restaurants and businesses that continue to support NPLD each year. Also provided is transportation to each project site, tools, instructions and safety demonstrations, a T-shirt, and a reusable shopping bag filled with swag.

Volunteers return year after year for a day of fun in the sun with like-minded outdoor-loving folks, as well as for the appreciation party at the end of the day, complete with live entertainment, drinks, food and loads of great door prizes.

Giving back to trails and open space not only feels good, it's a personal expression of thanks. So mark September 25th on your calendar to spend the day giving back to the public lands you love. There's no need to pre-register; just show up at Snow Mountain Ranch/YMCA of the Rockies at 7am and roll up your sleeves. To pre-register, contact the USDA Forest Service office in Granby at 970-887-4120.

The 2010 GRAND COUNTY NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY will consist of different projects. Stay tuned for information on the individual projects. Stay tuned for a flyer with more information.

National Public Lands Day

The mission of the National Public Lands Day (NPLD) Event, as stated by its creator, the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation (NEETF), is to promote volunteer awareness in protecting and sustaining public lands through an annual event of trail education, maintenance, and construction, thereby building advocacy and ownership for our public lands, and strengthening cooperation and communication among public agencies, communities, and businesses.

GRAND COUNTY’S HISTORY with the NPLD EVENT

Since 1995, Grand County has played host to one of the hundreds of NPLD celebrations across the country.  Now in its 16th year, Grand County's NPLD is the largest of its kind in Colorado.  Over the past years volunteers have accomplished over 20,000 hours of work on hundreds of miles of trails and many acres of both public and private lands.  With over 200 volunteers participating, and about six projects to complete in the day, NPLD has come to be highly anticipated by volunteer and staff alike.  Everyone who participates in the event gets breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with an appreciation party at the end of the day complete with live music and over $2,000.00 in prizes.
